Curriculum Journey

 

Key Stage 3

In year 7, students are introduced to KS3 English with the exciting novel Wild Boy by Rob Lloyd Jones which combines an understanding of the Victorian era with a thrilling detective story. Students then explore conflict through the study of poetry and letter writing. Shakespeare is introduced with A Midsummer Night’s Dream before students read a collection of short stories with shocking twists and turns.

In year 8, students focus on heroes and heroism through their study of the inspirational biography I Am Malala. They go on to discover new parts the world via poetry and travel writing before exploring Victorian Gothic extracts including Dracula. Finally, students develop their knowledge of Shakespeare by delving into his portrayal of women in a selection of his plays.

In year 9, the classic novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck lays the foundation of this transition year before students develop their poetry analysis skills whilst also creating character monologues. The year finishes with George Orwell’s Animal Farm and the award-winning Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman.

 

Key Stage 4

In year 10, students focus primarily on the Literature GCSE covering An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, Poetry Anthology and Unseen Poetry. Writing skills are also developed through creative and persuasive writing. Students will complete their Spoken Language Endorsement during this year.

In year 11, the primary focus is the Language GCSE which includes analysis of unseen fiction and non-fiction extracts. Students also revise and refine their knowledge of the GCSE Literature texts.
