Our Governors

The governing body has a range of duties and responsibilities. The role of a Governor is to offer challenge and support to the school, acting as a critical friend. Governors have the task of ensuring high quality provision for all pupils results from the joint endeavours of all staff, pupils, and all levels of governance. The Local Governing Bodies play a crucial role in assisting the Trustees in meeting the demands of their accountability, by providing focused governance at local school level, most accountability particularly in representing the views of the school’s stakeholders, including pupils, parents, staff and the local community.

Mr Paul Tempest

Role: Chair of Governors

Business Interests: None

I graduated from Hull University in 1972 and gained my teaching certificate from Liverpool University in 1973. I taught Science in Newcastle and Hull in the following years culminating as Head of Science at Malet Lambert School where I was introduced to school governance as their teacher governor. In 2012 I was invited to become Chair of Governors of The Boulevard Academy at its inception and remained so until my resignation in 2022, due to personal circumstances. I thoroughly enjoyed my role as a governor and found it an incredibly satisfying and challenging process to drive school improvement. I now wish to re-join The Boulevard Academy Local Governing Body as the academy enters a new stage in its developmental life. I feel that my skills, enthusiasm and affinity for the school would benefit the transition process. I furthermore look forward to working with the principal and SLT to drive the strategic development of the academy and raise the standards of achievement.

Phil Burns

Role: Vice Chair of Governors

Business Interests: None

Since joining the School Governing board in 2020, I have had the privilege of getting to know the inner workings of the Academy and meeting and getting to know some of the dedicated staff at The Boulevard Academy. I am enjoying the challenge of seeing the workings of a mainstream school from a different perspective, and hope to make a positive contribution.

I previously worked in Alternative Provision for almost 16 years, and enjoy making a difference. I have been delighted by the warm, family atmosphere, close community links and polite, well-motivated pupils at the Academy.

Away from school I enjoy spending time with my family, socialising with friends and watching Aston Villa.

Kieran Killick

Role: Staff Governor

Business Interests: None

I’m originally from Beverley, although I studied, worked and lived in Manchester for 10 years. I returned to Yorkshire in 2016, and joined the Boulevard Academy in April 2017. I have worked in education since 2012, during which I have held many different remits. I have a belief that everyone should have access to high quality education, which is why I joined the Governing Body. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, playing sports, travelling, and spending time with my family. I have two young boys, one of whom recently started Primary School.

Mrs Maria Gill

Role: Co-opted Governor

Business Interests: None

My career in education began in 1990 as a Nursery Nurse, working in the Foundation stage. I decided to further enhance my teaching abilities and pursued a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Qualified Teacher Status (BA Hons with QTS). I have two sons both with military careers and I am also a very proud Grandma of two. Moreover, my interest in pursuing the position of Secondary School Governor stems from my desire to gain insights into what happens beyond the Primary School setting.  It is my hope and intention that we build a friendly and supportive link between the primary school and The Boulevard Academy.
