Year 8 and 9 Options Event Success

The Boulevard Academy were delighted to host their first in-person COVID safe options event for Year 8s and 9s this year. The ‘COVID Bubble-friendly’ event took place on Wednesday in the school’s canteen and provided an inspirational afternoon for students who were able to explore the broad curriculum options available to them. The Year 8s and 9s were able to interact with subject leaders, ask questions, see examples of the topics they could study and sparked conversations about career paths that open up through studying each GCSE subject.

Potential BTEC PE students were able to take part in the 1 minute sit up exercise challenge, while over at the Science station there was a crime to solve using chromatography and fingerprinting, demonstrating how science links to careers such as criminology and biochemistry. Students were able to experience Virtual Reality at the Computer Science station while over at the History station, they played Historical Analysts determining the most significant events on the timeline.

Throughout the pandemic, subject leaders and the careers team have supported students virtually through Google Classroom and Zoom calls with external agencies to ensure that they are considering all the choices available to them for the future. Moving forward, staff at the Academy are looking forward to hosting more events like Wednesday’s where students are able to reinforce their knowledge of their options with taster experiences of the subjects in person.
