Able, Gifted & Talented
The Boulevard Academy is committed to ensuring that all students are supported and challenged to achieve at their highest level possible.
The Academy also identifies those students who are Able, Gifted and Talented to ensure they are given the opportunity to maximise their gifts and talents and in doing so benefit the school and the wider community.
What does Able, Gifted and Talented mean?
We define Able, Gifted and Talented as, “those children who are achieving or who have the potential to achieve at a level substantially beyond the rest of their peer group.”
At The Boulevard Academy, Able refers to students who are capable of working above the level of their peers in Literacy or Numeracy. As students progress into the Achievement Phase, able students are identified in all subjects.
Gifted refers to students who are consistently ahead of their peers in Literacy, Numeracy or their academic GCSE subjects.
Talented refers to students who consistently show great skill or potential in areas such as Music, Art, Drama or PE.
How are students identified as being Able, Gifted and Talented?
Students are recognised as Able based on their attainment in comparison to the rest of their cohort. This offers an opportunity for every student to progress to the Able, Gifted and Talented register.
Students are recognised as Talented through recognition from the relevant members of staff responsible for co-ordinating subjects such as Art, Music, Drama and PE. Each term, staff are asked for recommendations based on a student’s current performance.
How does the Academy support Able and Gifted students?
There are a range of actions for supporting Able and Gifted students. These include:
- Educational visits to Universities to encourage participation in Higher Education.
- Sampling of medium-term planning to ensure work is being differentiated to challenge higher ability students.
- Subject-based visits to increase engagement and give experience of a range of careers.
- Intervention by a Learning Mentor and the Gifted & Talented Coordinator in order to ensure progress.
How are Talented students be supported?
There are a range of actions to supporting Talented students. These include:
- Regular opportunities for students to hone their talent such as art club, music lessons and a range of school sport teams.
- Discussions with relevant subject co-ordinators to arrange for differentiation within lessons to allow students to make progress towards extra-curricular awards.
- Educational Visits to encourage students to aspire to reach the highest level.
How are these students recognised by the Academy?
To celebrate their success, each student has their picture framed and displayed around the school with a plaque detailing their achievements.
The honours board also features a message to all students, making it clear that they too can make it onto the board if they perform to a consistently high standard in their assessments.
What if my child isn’t on the Able, Gifted and Talented register?
We are passionately committed to developing every individual child to achieve their full potential.
All students who attend the Academy have a challenging and tailored learning programme that clearly identifies what they have achieved and their future goals.
Students regularly review their programmes with designated members of staff. Students are also supported by learning mentors where appropriate.
Every student is actively encouraged to aim high and aspire to more challenging goals, regardless of their ability, and is supported every step of the way.
Where possible, Able, Gifted and Talented visits will be opened up to a range of students as selected by their subject teachers and learning mentors.
